The Story Behind the Artwork

The South Island tomtit and fantail might steal the spotlight, but the warbler is one of the birds I hear most often. They're easy to overlook, quietly moving through the canopy, yet their song is almost impossible to ignore. Having adapted well to both native forest and rural areas, they're a familiar soundtrack to my days.

I have to admit, their call isn't my favourite. I hear it so often that it's become part of everyday life. But that's not a bad problem to have. It's encouraging to know this little bird is thriving, and I'm sure it couldn't care less what I think of its singing.

With this graphite portrait, I wanted to draw attention to a species that's often heard before it's seen. While it may not be as colourful or conspicuous as some of New Zealand's other native birds, it has its own quiet charm that's worth noticing.
