The Story Behind the Artwork
I've spent a lot of time around South Island robins while working in the Eglinton Valley, and they've become one of my favourite birds to watch. They're endlessly curious, but also a little cheeky. They'll stand nearby, watching you closely, eyeing up any insects you've disturbed, yet somehow never let you get quite close enough.

If you sit still long enough, though, their confidence starts to win over their caution. I've even had one hop onto my lap, apparently convinced that a loose thread on my clothing might be a tasty worm.

This graphite portrait is my attempt to capture that curious, confident character. It's those little encounters that make South Island robins such memorable companions in the forest and a species I'll never tire of seeing.
