The Story Behind the Artwork
Not all of my wildlife portraits aim to capture a quiet moment. With this kea, I wanted to capture the mischief that makes the species so well known.
Anyone who has spent time around kea knows they're endlessly curious. They're always investigating, pulling at things they shouldn't, and somehow looking both innocent and guilty at the same time. That cheeky personality was just as important to me as accurately drawing the feathers and beak.
Created in graphite, this portrait is my attempt to capture the playful character of one of New Zealand's most charismatic birds.
