The Story Behind the Artwork

Tree Portal was inspired by a remarkable tree I encountered on Chalky Island, a remote conservation sanctuary in Fiordland. Bent into a tight arch, the tree forms a natural portal - as if inviting you to step into another world. I had the privilege of working on this island, which is home to some of Aotearoa’s rarest wildlife, including the Fiordland crested penguin (tawaki) and the kākāpō.

This drawing, created entirely in ballpoint pen, captures both the wild character of the tree and the atmosphere of the island itself - windswept, resilient, and alive with stories. To me, the tree is more than a shape in the landscape; it is a threshold into the mysteries of Fiordland’s untouched beauty.

This original piece was awarded Highly Commended in ‘The Annual’ Art Exhibition at the Art Attic Gallery, Invercargill.
