The Story Behind the Artwork

Tree Portal was inspired by a remarkable tree I discovered while working on Chalky Island, a remote conservation sanctuary in Fiordland. Unlike some of my other drawings, this one didn't need any imagination - the reality was extraordinary enough. Bent into a perfect arch, the tree looked as though it had grown into its own natural doorway.

As a conservation biologist, one of the greatest privileges of my work is being able to visit places like Chalky Island. It's a landscape unlike anywhere else I've experienced, with rugged coastlines, unique coastal vegetation, thriving wildlife, and a sense of wildness that's hard to put into words. Every visit leaves me in awe of nature.

Drawn entirely in ballpoint pen, this piece captures not only the tree itself but also the feeling of standing in that incredible place. I hope it conveys some of the wonder I felt while exploring one of Fiordland's most remarkable islands.

This original drawing was awarded Highly Commended at The Annual Art Exhibition at the Art Attic Gallery in Invercargill.
