🌿 The Story Behind the Artwork

This graphite drawing captures a kea in a rare moment of stillness.

The alpine parrot is usually in motion or mischief, but here I was interested in what happens when it pauses, when its attention sharpens and the landscape seems to hold its breath around it. The beak, the layered feathers, the steady gaze all reveal a kind of intelligence that feels almost conversational.

Drawn over 9.25 hours on textured archival paper, this study builds form slowly through graphite tone, honouring a bird that is as much personality as it is subject.
