The Story Behind the Artwork

Kea are full of personality, and that's what I wanted to capture in this portrait. Known for their intelligence and curiosity, they always seem to have an expression that makes you wonder what they're thinking.

Created in graphite over 9.25 hours on textured archival paper, this drawing focuses on the kea's distinctive features, from the powerful beak to the layered feathers - while trying to capture the character that makes these alpine parrots so unforgettable.

Rather than simply creating a realistic likeness, my aim was to portray the spirit of one of New Zealand's most iconic birds.
