The Story Behind the Artwork

The Lighthouse was my first attempt at drawing a seascape and an opportunity to experiment with light and shadow. I liked the idea of a lighthouse illuminating only a small part of the landscape, leaving the rest hidden in darkness. Of course, that landscape had to be Fiordland.

The lighthouse itself is imaginary. There isn't one tucked away in Fiordland's remote coastline, but I enjoyed imagining what its beam might reveal as it swept across the night. In its light, a New Zealand fur seal rests on the rocks while a Fiordland crested penguin quietly emerges from the bush.

This drawing was an exercise in restraint. Rather than filling every part of the page with detail, I let the darkness become just as important as the light. By revealing only a small part of the scene, I hope it sparks a sense of curiosity about what might lie beyond the beam.

The lighthouse may be fictional, but the wildlife and wild beauty of Fiordland are very real.
