The Story Behind the Artwork
The takahē has always been a bird I've admired. Although I've only seen them at the Te Anau Wildlife Centre so far, I hope that one day I'll be lucky enough to encounter one in the wild.

This is one of my earlier graphite drawings, and at the time I chose to focus on the head rather than the entire bird. The takahē has such distinctive features - the bold red beak, deep blue plumage and coarse feather textures - that a close portrait felt like the best way to capture its character.

Once thought extinct until its remarkable rediscovery in the Murchison Mountains in 1948, the takahē has become one of New Zealand's greatest conservation success stories. That history makes every opportunity to see one feel a little bit special.
