The Story Behind the Artwork
Silvereyes are one of those birds I most often notice at home rather than in the forest. They visit my garden in lively little flocks, never staying still for long as they flit from branch to branch, constantly keeping an eye on their surroundings. In native forest I usually hear them more than I see them, as they're often high in the canopy.
One of my favourite things to watch is a silvereye swallowing a native berry that's almost too big for it. They somehow manage it every time, and it's always entertaining to see. Maybe I should draw that scene one day!
For this graphite portrait, though, I wanted to focus on the bird itself. My aim was to capture the alert, inquisitive expression that seems to define silvereyes - small birds with endless energy and a character that's easy to overlook until you stop and watch them for a while.
