🌿 The Story Behind the Artwork

I wanted to create something a little different with this fantail portrait. Having spent time searching for nests during fieldwork, I became fascinated by the remarkable little homes these birds build. Their nests have such a neat, cup-like shape that I've always thought they looked a bit like ice cream cones.

That distinctive shape inspired the composition of this drawing. It creates the perfect frame for the fantail, allowing the bird to sit comfortably within the nest while still showing off its character.

I also enjoyed exploring the textures of woven plant fibres. The contrast between the intricate nest and the soft feathers made this a particularly rewarding piece to draw, inspired by countless hours spent in New Zealand's forests observing native birds.
