The fantail (Pīwakawaka) is one of New Zealand’s most charming and energetic birds, known for its distinctive fanned tail and lively movements. In this graphite drawing, I’ve captured a quiet moment of a fantail sitting protectively on its eggs, surrounded by the intricately built nest. I spent a lot of time observing and drawing the nest in detail, highlighting the delicate materials, twigs, moss, and spider silk, that the bird carefully weaves together to create a secure home. I often observe fantails while working in the bush, and seeing them care for their young is a gentle reminder of the intricate rhythms of nature. This artwork celebrates both the delicate beauty of the bird and the quiet intimacy of life in the nest.
