🌿 The Story Behind the Artwork
This detailed graphite drawing captures a New Zealand long-tailed bat (Chalinolobus tuberculatus) in mid flight against a charcoal background. Each line traces the fine textures of its fur and outstretched wings, freezing a fleeting nocturnal moment in stillness.
The long-tailed bat is one of only two surviving native land mammals in Aotearoa and is now nationally threatened. I’ve been fortunate to work closely with bats in the field, observing their delicate agility and the quiet complexity of their world. Their ability to navigate darkness through echolocation continues to inspire both wonder and respect, this artwork is my way of giving visibility to a species that’s rarely seen, yet vital to our forest ecosystems.
