The Story Behind the Artwork
I've spent more hours than I could ever count following mōhua through the forest as part of outcome monitoring after their reintroduction. Much of that time has been spent simply watching, listening and recording, hoping to catch a glimpse of an individual as it moves through the canopy.
Although I've never handled them, I've come to know them through their behaviour. They're enthusiastic little singers, constantly calling as they forage, and they're surprisingly acrobatic. Watching a mōhua hang upside down to reach an insect hidden beneath moss, or flick bark aside in search of food, is always a reminder of how perfectly adapted they are to life in the forest.
This graphite portrait is my tribute to one of New Zealand's most treasured native birds. Beyond their beautiful yellow plumage, I wanted to capture the lively, determined character that I've come to admire through countless hours spent observing them in the wild.
