The Story Behind the Artwork
I've drawn fantails many times over the years, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of them. They're one of New Zealand's most familiar native birds, often flitting around people in search of the insects we disturb as we walk through the bush. They always seem to have something to say, darting from branch to branch as if they're following you on your journey.
This graphite portrait was my attempt to capture that lively, inquisitive personality. A friend once pointed out that the white markings above a fantail's eyes look like a pair of grumpy eyebrows, and now I can't unsee it. Every time I draw one, I find myself smiling at that expression.
More than anything, I wanted this portrait to celebrate the charm and character of a bird that so many New Zealanders have fond memories of encountering in the wild.
