🌿 The Story Behind the Artwork
Forest Care is a symbolic drawing about guardianship and responsibility. A hand cradles a living New Zealand native forest, reminding us that these wild places exist in our care. Every tree, every fern, and every creature relies on the choices we make in how we protect them. If you look closely, you’ll even find a small bird hidden in the scene, a quiet inhabitant of this fragile world.
The forest itself is drawn with careful attention to detail, featuring ferns, a young lancewood, rimu, kāmahi, and a towering southern red beech among other plants. These species are part of the intricate, layered ecosystems that make New Zealand forests so unique and vital.
Created entirely in black ballpoint pen, the drawing was built up over 36 hours, layer by layer, in a slow and meditative process that mirrors the patience and resilience of the forest itself.
For me, this piece is both a tribute and a gentle call to action. Forests cannot speak for themselves, yet they hold the life of so many. By holding them with care - in our hands, in our decisions, and in our future - we ensure their song continues for generations to come.
