Forest Penguin on Chalky Island
Inspired by the rugged shoreline of Fiordland, Forest Penguin on Chalky Island began with the island's remarkable wind-shaped trees. While working on this remote conservation island, I often found myself admiring their twisted forms and the quiet atmosphere of the forest meeting the sea.
Although I never encountered a tawaki (Fiordland crested penguin) beneath these trees, they are known to come ashore around the island, and more than once they made an unexpected appearance on our wildlife cameras. As someone who has always loved penguins, I couldn't resist imagining one exploring this characterful forest. This drawing captures the moment I wished I had witnessed myself.
Created from an original ink drawing, this artwork celebrates one of New Zealand's most elusive birds and the wild beauty of Fiordland, blending careful observation with a touch of imagination.
