Inspired by the ancient beech forests of Fiordland, Kiwi Under Roots began with a single tree that caught my attention while exploring the forest. Its twisted roots formed a natural opening, almost like a hidden burrow, and I found myself imagining what might emerge from beneath them.
From that moment of curiosity, this ink drawing was born: a kiwi stepping into the forest beneath the glow of moonlight filtering through the trees. Although this is a scene created from imagination, it reflects the mystery and wonder I feel when spending time among New Zealand’s native forests.
Every detail in this black-and-white artwork captures the textures and atmosphere of the forest floor, the tangled roots, shifting shadows, and the quiet presence of one of New Zealand’s most iconic birds.
