I Saw

$95.00

I Saw was created for the Te Hikoi Museum and Archive Art Challenge in 2024, where artists were invited to create an artwork inspired by an object or image from the museum’s collection.

I chose a historic logging photograph as my starting point and reimagined it as a surreal reflection on the relationship between people and the forest. A vintage logging saw cuts through a cross-section of native timber, yet from the blade emerges new life, a forest growing back from what has been taken.

The landscape, tree rings, and native species within the artwork are carefully researched and inspired by the forests of the local area. A logger with his pipe, a curious weka exploring below, and a watchful morepork among the branches bring together the human and natural stories held within the forest.

Originally created in ink, I Saw explores themes of history, change, resilience, and renewal. The artwork was awarded the People’s Choice Award at the Te Hikoi Museum and Archive Art Challenge and the original has since been sold.
