Gift of the Forest

$210.00

Gift of the Forest is part of my ongoing hand series, exploring the relationship between people and the natural world through moments of holding, protecting, and appreciating the forest around us.

This artwork was inspired by the history of logging in the Longwood Range, where native forests were once felled for timber. While researching the species that once grew in these forests, I imagined a different kind of offering: a hand presenting a bouquet of native trees, each one representing the unique character and beauty of the forest.

The bouquet features rātā, red beech, kahikatea, rimu, and kāmahi, with hidden native birds woven throughout the composition, including a kārearea. Their presence hints at resilience, life continuing and adapting despite the changes brought by human intervention.

Created in black ballpoint pen over 36.5 hours, this monochrome drawing focuses on texture, detail, and the intricate forms of New Zealand’s native forests. The trees are arranged in proportion to their natural heights, creating a botanical portrait of a forest that carries both history and hope.

Created from an original ballpoint pen drawing, Gift of the Forest is available as a fine art giclée print, preserving the detailed linework and depth of the original artwork.
