Fiordland Underwater explores an imagined journey through one of New Zealand’s most unique environments, from the rugged coastline above the water to the hidden world below.
The idea began with a desire to reveal the full depth of a Fiordland fiord in a single artwork: a cross-section showing the connection between land and sea. Without being able to explore these underwater landscapes myself, I immersed myself in research, studying photographs, videos, and information about the species that inhabit these remarkable waters.
The final drawing brings together a carefully researched collection of Fiordland species, from a tawaki (Fiordland crested penguin) to the intricate marine life hidden below.
Originally created as a detailed A3 graphite drawing, this artwork combines scientific curiosity with imagination, inviting the viewer to discover the many layers of life within a Fiordland fiord.
