Forest at Night is one of my early explorations into combining landscape and wildlife within a single artwork. Inspired by a walk to Green Lake in Fiordland, I photographed the forest during the day before reimagining it as a moonlit scene filled with the hidden life of the night.
Within the detailed ink drawing, a kiwi searches among the forest floor, a morepork (ruru) watches quietly from the trees, and long-tailed bats move across the moonlit sky. These imagined encounters reflect the mystery and wonder of exploring New Zealand’s native forests after dark.
Created from an original ink drawing, Forest at Night captures the quiet atmosphere of Fiordland and the unseen world that comes alive when the forest falls silent.
