This graphite portrait is one of my earlier drawings and captures a species that would later become an important part of my conservation work.
At the time, I was simply fascinated by the New Zealand falcon (kārearea). Its sharp gaze and intricate plumage made it a rewarding subject to draw, and I spent countless hours building the portrait feather by feather.
Years later, I found myself working alongside kārearea in the field, helping to better understand this remarkable and still understudied bird. Looking back, it's special to realise this drawing came long before I knew how closely our paths would cross.
