Although Cheeky Owl is an imagined composition, it was inspired by a memorable encounter while carrying out bird surveys on Pomona Island in Lake Manapōuri.
In the middle of the day, a morepork (ruru) flew quietly along the forest track towards me before landing in a nearby tree. Instead of disappearing into the forest, it paused to watch me with curiosity. This drawing became my way of capturing that inquisitive personality rather than recreating a single moment.
