🌿 The Story Behind the Artwork
This detailed drawing focuses on the head of the native New Zealand morepork (ruru), highlighting the captivating intensity of its large, expressive eyes and intricate facial disc. I was inspired to capture this remarkable bird’s sharp, observant nature, as rurus are often seen as guardians of the forest at night. Equipped with exceptional night vision, they can detect prey even in near darkness, and their silent flight allows them to move unseen through the forest canopy. Their distinctive “more-pork” call and elusive nocturnal habits contribute to their mysterious, almost mythical presence in Māori legend, making them a truly enchanting subject to observe and depict.
