Kiwi Stump Dweller | Ink Drawing on Fine Art Paper

In Kiwi Stump Dweller, I focused on a close-up scene: a southern brown kiwi peeking out from a moss-covered stump, surrounded by detailed ferns and undergrowth. I studied field guides and botanical references to draw realistic moss textures and accurately depict different fern species. I aimed for an intimate feel, not too dark, highlighting the kiwi’s transition from underground safety to curious emergence.

I chose this subject partly because of recent conservation news: in July 2025, a little spotted kiwi (kiwi pukupuku ) was rediscovered in the wild on the West Coast, the first mainland sighting in nearly 50 years. That hopeful moment inspired the drawing's mood: a kiwi happily emerging into the world after a long day underground.
